for Inclusive Design
Creation of new symbols for AAC and the experiment of their position in the space
When we talk about inclusive design, we refer to design for human diversity, inclusion, and equality. The beauty of this type of design approach is that the artifacts created are not only usable for the users, in this case autistic children, but are accessible to a large number of people.

Quando si parla di design inclusivo ci si riferisce al design per la diversità umana, l’inclusione e l’uguaglianza. La bellezza di questa tipologia di approccio al design è che gli artefatti realizzati non sono fruibili solamente per gli utenti finali, in questo caso bambini autistici, ma sono accessibili a un gran numero di persone.
The project is divided in three parts:
1. A manual containing the research on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with focus on:
- The communicative needs of children with autism
- Study of the relationship between text and illustration
- Research on symbol systems in AAC
- Explanation of the project

Il progetto si suddivide principalmente in tre parti:
1. Un manuale che contiene la ricerca sulla CAA (Comunicazione Aumentativa e Alternativa) con focus su:
- I bisogni comunicativi dei bambini autistici
- Studio del rapporto tra testo e illustrazione
- Ricerca sui sistemi simboli in CAA
- Spiegazione del progetto
2. Creation of new symbols in CAA
Symbols were constructed following the rules of the symbolic system PASS (Picture Augmentative Synsemic System), so the graphic language could communicate with the symbols already existing within this system. At the same time, new internal coherence criteria were studied and implemented to the new symbols.

I simboli sono stati costruiti in seguito allo studio dei diversi sistemi simbolici esistenti e utilizzando come base il PASS (Picture Augmentative Synsemic System), al fine che la scelta del linguaggio grafico possa comunicare in maniera coerente con i simboli già esistenti all'interno di questo sistema. Allo stesso tempo sono stati studiati e realizzati dei nuovi criteri di coerenza interna.

3. Realizzazione di due libri che contengono lo stesso racconto ma che hanno una collocazione del testo differente nello spazio
In the first prototype, the symbols are placed on the pages following the arrangement of Sabatini diagrams, while in the second they are presented in a linear way.
The two books were then tested with the aim of understanding which type of text placement allows reach a better comprehension of the story in children with autism.

Nel primo prototipo i simboli si collocano nelle pagine seguendo la disposizione dei diagrammi di Sabatini, mentre nel secondo si presentano in maniera lineare.
I due libri sono poi stati testati con lo scopo di capire quale tipologia di collocazione del testo permette una maggiore comprensione in bambini autistici.

The artifacts were designed following the principles of inclusive design, so they arise from observation, research and the needs of individuals, considering the different children's abilities and the normal diversity that exists in the world.

Gli artefatti sono stati progettati seguendo i principi del design inclusivo, dunque nascono dall’osservazione, dalla ricerca e dalle necessità degli individui, considerando le molteplici sfaccettature, le abilità diversificate dei bambini e la normale diversità che esiste nel mondo.
