MyTutor Motion Graphics Experiment

I have been experimenting with After Effects workflows for character animation.

I very much like the illustration style used on the mytutor.co.uk website. So as an experiment I remade this static illustration as a looping animation.
To begin with I re-made the PNG illustration as a layered vector file in Adobe Illustrator.
I then imported the vector layers into After Effects, named and colour-coded each layer and pick-whipped each child element to it's parent: hand to arm, arm to body etc. This allowed me to animate the larger items, while still being able to apply subtle movement to each individual element.
I was trying to match the hand-drawn style of the original MyTutor illustration, so I added an adjustment layer with a Turbulent Displacement effect to give a subtle hand-animated look and a Roughen Edges effect to some of the layers to add some grit and shading to the design.

I also added a Posterize Time effect to lock the sequence to a lower frame rate and added some animated grain over the whole video to add a sense of physical animation to the digital animation.
Shown above is a Lottie version of the animation. A little less gritty and hand-drawn, but formatted to play within a web page as a super small Lottie JSON format.

You can find this animation in .json format in my Lottie portfolio: lottiefiles.com/samjallen
