March 2020. After days and days of intense work, this exciting project for Fanta Uva was virtually finished. We were polishing the stem of the cherry on top of the cake.
Then, the agency got in touch:

“Hey guys, just to let you know that there was gonna be a lavish product launch party with lots of people coming and going and your video playing on loop, but due to this corona thing everything´s been canceled. You can´t show this for 2 years. Bye”

The coronavirus pandemic was officially declared all over the world.

We instantly found solace in the idea of publishing it the following month, when the pandemic would be over and everything would revert to normal. Luckily cut out animation would still be cool by then.

And you bet it still is, baby!

Check out this little piece that looks and tastes fresh out of the oven, but it's coming out of the fridge and brought to your table after 2 years.
The client had the idea of a glitchy collage aesthetic. That´s two different types of chaotic auras we had to balance.
Feel these art tests and animatic. 
We wanted a 2D look & feel on our cutout animation, so laying it out in 2D was step 1. Then we would define which cutout assets we would need.
Next, we sketched each asset in Photoshop, creating an import-ready file for After Effects.​​​​​​​
We built our puppets in After Effects the old way, moving pivots and parenting the assets with hierarchies. We then rotoscoped the 2D pass, animating each character stop frame by stop frame.​​​​​​​
Once that was done, the cleanup process consisted on replacing each asset on the PSD file with its corresponding collage treatment. 
And boom!
