Living in NY means we eat a lot of noodles. And that can get messy.
But what if… after years of practice, you suddenly realize you’ve become
a chopstick ninja? The idea for this piece came to us while walking by one
of our favorite noodle shops this past winter.
To bring this typical NYC experience to life, we decided to use bold colors, bold proportions and a rhythmic music track. We wanted to pack as much flavor into
this bite-size gif as a hot bowl of noodles on a winter day.
Animation
Cel animation felt like a natural choice to make nice gooey noodles come to life.
We wanted the animation to be as expressive as the illustration and Melisa Farina
brought her A-game, bringing energy to each bite.
Illustration
Emans created the amazing illustration for this piece. He used a bright, warm color palette to emulate the comfort of a tasty meal and a layered illustration style to express the diverse, beautiful cacophony of the city.
Process
Emans made the initial sketches in Procreate and then brought them into Adobe
Illustrator to finesse them. For the final touches, he used Adobe Photoshop.
Once the vector illustration was ready, Melisa worked on the animation in Toon Boom.
