The original Reading Rainbow program premiered in 1983 on PBS Kids. Hosted by actor LeVar Burton, the show ran for 26 seasons, making it the third-longest-running show in PBS history. An eclectic range of more than 100 guest stars visited the show, among them Maya Angelou and Kermit the Frog.
The new version of the show, scheduled to air in 2022, will utilize the same 25-minute format as the original. Instead of one host, however, a troupe of young performers called “Rainbows” will host “Reading Rainbow Live,” incorporating musical performances, cultural explorations, and a book of the day into each episode. The updated version will also add in interactive element, inviting young viewers to ask questions and follow along via an online platform.
