Character and Environment Design
A project for my Intro to Character and Environment Design unit, resulting in a character profile, turnarounds, and a full colour illustration of the chosen character in their environment.
The character I chose to proceed with was this candle boy. He was actually the first character I drew, and is seen in two iterations. I came up with a backstory to flesh out his personality and help me to come up with environments for the final illustration.
I drew a series of turnarounds to figure out what he looks like from different angles. We had to experiment with different illustration styles and colour palettes. I used both Photoshop and Illustrator for this task. I think this exercise was useful because it pushed me to use brushes and tool I hadn't tried before, as well as experiment with colour combinations. Ultimately though, I decided to go with very simple colour palette for my final illustration because I thought it better suited the character and the environment.
I came up with a series of locations for my character to inhabit. In the end I chose a dark, spooky forest because I thought the eerie environment would best convey the frighting situations Timmy finds himself in, and show his bravery.
