Hiroshi Hamaya: The Many Faces of Postwar Japan

I designed, printed, and bound this book from scratch for my Intermediate Typography class, on the work of Japanese photographer Hiroshi Hamaya. The book was risograph-printed (single-colour black for all greyscale spreads, and four-colour CMYK process for all colour plates), with French-folded pages and Japanese stab-stitch binding.

Due to Hamaya’s work mostly having been archived before the availability of high-quality scanners, his photography is not widely available in high-resolution online, and would have come out blurry if printed via laser/inkjet. I decided to use the risograph to bypass these flaws, using screen-print grain to turn his photos into hazy, weathered windows into Japan’s postwar era.

Given Hamaya’s reputation as one of the foremost documentarians of Japanese tradition, I opted for stab-stitch binding and a single serif typeface (Athelas) with this book to reflect that.
