A. Savage: Sound and Vision

This book on the art of A. Savage (a painter and musician) was the second of two final projects I designed, printed, and bound from scratch for my Intermediate Typography class. The book was printed in high-quality inkjet, with French-folded pages and Japanese stab-stitch binding.

Savage’s work is kinetic, colourful, and visceral, and I hoped to capture that with the designed elements of the book. Using orange as the key colour in the book (corresponding to the colour of the jumper he wears in all his press photos), I combined this with a chaotic title font (Machine Learning, a font generated through teaching a neural network to “write”) and a pared-back copy font (Eina) to fully encapsulate the essence of his work in the book’s final look and feel.

Savage is also well-known in New York City’s DIY scene (as the frontman of punk band Parquet Courts), and I therefore eschewed the usual modes of perfect binding for stab-stitch binding, which looks more “homemade.”
