Becoming CMH
Website Illustrations
Becoming Centre for Medical Health is a newly launched mental health counselling service based in Chennai, India. I was commissioned to make illustrations for their website.
1. Concepts and rough sketches
The word "Becoming" underlies the core principles at Becoming CMH - stemming from Carl Rogers' idea that the good life is one where we are in a flow of change, that we are a process, and that we are always becoming.
Although the concept is abstract, it was decided to create a basic character to represent the visitor to the website. I came up with two sets of concepts based on my interpretation of the theme.
In the first set of concepts, I proposed a theme of inner journey, being at peace and acceptance, moving forward, within.
In the second set of concepts, I proposed a theme of growth, journey, direction and a sense that there is no destination as such - your path is ever evolving as you keep moving forward. In these concepts I also added a "companion" on the journey in the form of a cat. This set was ultimately finalised.
2. Colours
Since the website and logo already had a fixed colour palette, I decided to use the same for the illustrations, adding only an orange-ish colour for the skin tone for the woman character. This would help the illustrations feel like a cohesive part of the whole website.
3. Final illustrations
Thankfully the client shared my love of cats, so we decided to keep the cat in the illustrations. The cat would act as a stand-in for the therapist, while the woman would represent a "patient".
