2018 EXHIBITION: Rossignol Battle Memorial / BE

Rossignol Memorial
Client: Commune de Tintigny - Belgium

On August 22, 1914, the village of Rossignol witnessed one of the deadliest days of the First World War. Thousands of soldiers perish in the French and German armies fighting that day. Civilians too are marked by this tragic episode of the war! Many residents of Rossignol and neighboring villages will be shot by the Germans.

A century later, the town of Tintigny undertook to set up an interpretation center.

The new memorial is located in the park of Rossignol castle, in the village of Tintigny, situated in the Greater Region which connects countries as France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg into the major conflict of the 20th century.

THE PICTURES BELOW ARE THE ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AIMING TO SET-UP THE EXHIBITION DESIGN FOR THE INTERPRETATION CENTER

Contextualization of the battle for borders and the start of the 14-18 War
A first context is necessary before getting to the heart of the matter. In this firstpart, we wish both to outline the context of the Battle of the Borders butalso to go back to the causes which precipitated Europe in the world conflict while avoiding a"Germanophobia" in the treatment of the subject

The day of August 22, 1914
In this second step, it is the experiences of soldiers from both camps that will be told throughoutthis day of August 22, 1914 with the desire to talk about the entire day, not just theBattle of Rossignol, but do not omit the battles of St-Vincent, Bellefontaine and Etalle

Daily life and violence against civilians
This third chapter focuses on the experiences of civilians. Often seldom mentioned in other places of memory, the story of civilians is yet another cornerstone that allows us to understand the historical complexity of the facts. In Tintigny, as in many martyred villages and towns, August 1914 was particularly bloody for civilians and left heavy marks in the collective and personal memory of the villagers
the sketches presented here are the illustrations of the different ideas that allowed us to win the competition and to subsequently carry out the work that has just been inaugurated

This project was realised with the Kascen team in Belgium. My role into this project, was the concept design of the exhibition and the execution of the competition drawings shown here
