Museum of Panama City - Imaginando la Ciudad Exhibit

Retrospective of Panamanian cinema

The Museum of Panama City (MUCPA) organized multiple events during 2019 within the commemorative framework of the 500 years of the city foundation, and this exhibition is part of that historical journey that, through cinema, portrays us as a society.

Unlike traditional museums, the MUCPA does not have an official physical location as it is a traveling museum. For this exhibition, the chosen space was the Hatillo Building, where the Gladys Vidal Theater and the Mayor's Office of Panama are located.

The exhibition consisted of two parts; projections of films from different periods within the theater and installations with traffic cones turned into curious lamps, which illuminated acrylic plates with illustrations of 14 iconic theaters in Panama and ColĆ³n, illustrations that I had the honor to do.

The emblematic Bella Vista Theater

I remember as a child having attended matinees organized by the school at the Bella Vista Theater. It was one of the most attractive buildings in the city for its illuminated faƧade and a beautiful cursive sign, which in my imagination, the architect would have written in his own handwriting in the air; an element that without a doubt I had to make sure that it was as precise as possible, since it was very present in the collective memory.

The theater opened its doorsĀ in 1951. Over time it fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2013 to make way for the construction of a residential building.
