Sabrina Mazigh I Gaƫtan Le Coarer

Critical analysis of the visiting experience within a heritage space Ā
The case of Saint John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta
Sabrina Mazigh I Gaƫtan Le Coarer
Located in the heart of Valletta, St John the Baptist Co-Cathedral is structured through a cultural stratification that forms the basis of Malta's identity. Through the influence of the civilisations of the Mediterranean, the architecture, aesthetics and media strategies form a hybrid and homogeneous whole of the place and the local.
From an immersive VR device, we focus our interest on the experience of visiting this emblematic place that is the Co-cathedral. Starting with an inventory of the premises, we were able to make a multiple observation allowing us to see the different facets of this space. Starting with the use of media supports, we found that there is a variety of media (audio guides, screens, leaflets, film projections, etc.). They are scattered throughout the Co-cathedral in a transmedia and linear form that seeks to facilitate the visit. These devices, which constrain the whole of the environment, disrupt the discovery of the Co-cathedral insofar as the visitor finds himself attached, or even handcuffed, by his personal device, the audioguide and the other supports that surround him, which disrupts / detaches his integration and adaptation in the space.
In this sense, the interference of these various media supports leaves the user's body distanced from the experience of the visit itself. Understanding this interference, no longer as a default element produced by the simple multiplicity of devices, leads us to think of a sensitive cartography. The latter allows us to redraw the experience of the visit, by playing on a Maltese multicultural model and on the interfered space.
Our device aims at penetrating the flesh of the interference in order to invest, thanks to an innovative strategy, a new immersive space carrying the i/material cultural heritage (at the threshold of the material and the immaterial).
