This is my final practical project for school. I'm a huge fan of mythology, so I decided to do a depiction of my favourite Yoruba goddess, Oya.
Oya in my opinion is the embodiment of a strong woman. She's in charge of bringing change and often uses things that on the surface are quite destructive, such as fire, strong wind, tornadoes. She also carries a cutlass to clear the way for new things. She's the goddess of lightning and also guards the entrance of cemeteries. She's the goddess of the river niger and her sacred number is nine ( the river niger divides into nine tributaries).
I used a technique called paper quilling which basically involves rolling and shaping strips of paper to create forms. I don't have access to pre-cut paper, so I had to cut my strips by hand. It's 3ft wide and 5ft high and I've been working on it for five weeks now.
Photographs taken by my awesome friend Maureen Maduadichie.
