For the amazing Free Fire Yomost VFL Winter 2021 - Rise Above campaign, our team work on this trailer from start to finish. This is also the first time tried some new workflow with 3D and 2D Animation, so there is a lot to learn.
These are the artworks that were crafted for the final animation. The character designs are illustrated from the real players who took part in the campaign.
Our challenge is to highlight every player/character skill. It’s our job to make it impressive with the animation, elements, to show the full specialty of each character. Everything was based on the storyboard below. The effects of tornado and lighting were all added after the draft animation to make the scene more detaily and cinematography. They clearly bring the animation to life and showcase the best of the player.
Storyboard is a crucial part of any animation project. With this, we will have a clearer idea of the arrangement, structure and positioning of every element and character, while keeping track of the flow of the animation as a whole.
Our recipe is straight-forward but effective. All the animations were made in 3D, then render to be 2D with cel and cartoon shading. The illustrations (that are based on the real photo of the players) is sculpted into 3D objects. Rigging and animation is the last part, along with composite everything in AE These are the main tools we used in this projects: Zbrush for Sculpting, Blender for Animation, Compositing by Adobe After Effects, and to keep track with everything, Notion is the way to go.
One fun fact, this is how we create our DYI/homemade reference, by by acting like we are the real character. And here is a little messy snippet of our behind the scene, as long as the final product is good! Everything behind camera is a lie!
