The Libraries and Learning Services Facebook page publishes a steady stream of content. A lot of it covers books, online services and online learning. It's always a challenge to keep things visually interesting when you're mostly showing books and laptops.
During 2020, we started running out of stock photography with students, and it was impossible to arrange a photoshoot in the lockdown. Instead, we used a range of plush toys.
Many of the posts highlight online resources. This is where fast photo-editing came in handy, allowing me to include our resources into stock photos.
Finding images to match a post about academic articles can be tricky. I figured that for our target audience of 18-22 year olds, a SpongeBob mention might garner a few likes and help them feel at ease when engaging with us.
Staff book pics
Once a month, we profile a book that a staff member has chosen. Having just a photo of the book is pretty boring. If it's an art book, there are often copyright restrictions.

I started doing my own photo setups to create a more visually engaging post and stir curiosity.
We needed to profile a book of doodles by famous artists. Problem: you can't just put copyrighted art on Facebook. This was a workaround.
I had one hour to get this post done, so I made use of a copy of the book and some post-its. The book is about a planet where people do not have genders, so I post-edited the stickers into the colours of the non-binary pride flag.
The post that went with this image came up while I was working from home, so I set up a photo-shoot on the dining table with what I had at hand.
