Hannah Samaddar's profile

Craftivism Publication

The brief was to produce an integrated and compelling publication from one of the supplied texts. I chose Fiona Hackney’s article called “Quiet Activism and the new Amateur, The power of home and Hobby Crafts” which explores domestic crafts in relation to themes such as activism, feminism and progression.
My motive was to explore themes such as activism, femininity and domestic life using a style/format inspired by the magazines of the 1930s which are referenced throughout the article. In terms of imagery, I very much wanted illustration to be the main form of expression and graphic element within the publication. Colour, texture, shape and most importantly 'imperfection' were the key focuses when it came to my illustrations. I wanted to play on the idea of “off-cuts” created during the process of crafting, and their overlooked beauty. I wanted the illustrations to be bold, unapologetic and stand out on the page. It was important to be diverse with the shapes and textures so the reader remained intrigued as to what was next, however at the same time it was equally as important to keep consistent, therefore using a strong colour pallet and grid structure.
All illustrations were created by me.
