Dementia is a deteriorating brain condition that robs over 50 million people internationally of their memory, comprehension, competency, and behavioral awareness over time. As part of creating awareness, Alzheimer's Orange County helps people to understand the various types of dementia and their causes.

The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Although research on the causes of Alzheimer’s disease is still underway, it is thought that the disease is caused by an abnormal build-up of two proteins, namely amyloid and tau, which deposit plaques and tangles around and within the brain cells. Although there is no definite cure for this condition, medicines like donepezil can help lessen the symptoms and improve the function of the brain.

Another type of dementia is vascular dementia, which is caused by a reduction of the blood flow to the brain. This reduction of blood flow eventually damages and kills brain cells. Reduced blood flow into the brain can result from a blockage in the small blood vessels found in the brain or stroke. However, not everyone who has had a stroke will necessarily develop vascular dementia.

The other common type of dementia is mixed dementia, where a person can have both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Mixed dementia is most common in older people. With mixed dementia, it can be a challenge determining which type of dementia is most responsible for a person’s condition.
