Tjald: July 5 Gig Poster

Concept & Objectives

My objective in making this poster was to capture the essence of folk/pop music for the band Tjald. They have a gig coming up and they wanted their poster to focus on the feeling of their music. I styled the poster to showcase the adventurous and outdoorsy feel of their music.
Sketches
My sketches started out as an outdoor scene. I wanted to convey adventure with a van on a mountain road.
Vector Drafts

I created a fun mountain with a road and van. Transferring my sketches to the computer was difficult, but I was happily surprised by my progress.
After having the band look at my draft, they told me it didn't have enough meaning. It was just a scene. They wanted it to portray their music more metaphorically.
Final Poster
And thus, this gig poster was born. The van itself portrays the wanderlust and adventure. To me, BMW vans symbolize a calm, carefree adventure. I added a scene of trees and a lake on top of the van to show the adventure that my previous drafts had the van driving toward. With the nature elements on top, the van is no longer the conduit to adventure, but rather the adventure itself.

Tjald was pleased with the result and will be printing this poster for their upcoming gig.
