Understanding Child Custody Evaluation

Dr. Miriam Galindo, a licensed psychologist, works in her private practice in Irvine, California. Dr. Miriam Galindo provides child custody evaluation and family therapy. She has maintained her private practice since 2011.

Child custody evaluation assesses both parents and a child, to make expert recommendations to the court regarding the restructuring of parental rights and responsibilities centered on the best interest of the child. Normally, this is required when relationship dissolution between adults (mostly parents) requires a thorough evaluation, relocation, and/or termination of parental rights.

To avoid confusion, child custody evaluation does not necessarily have to involve parents who are about to divorce per se (since some may not be officially married), and the parent may or may not be living together before the dissolution. Examples of exceptions to divorce where parental right relocation may be necessary include situations where one of the parents seeks to relocate due to work-related or other reasons.

At the time of conflict, parents may have multiple resolution resources at their disposal - these may include consultation, psychotherapy, and counseling. The court may not be required if the parents agree to a child custody arrangement initially (on their own). However, in cases where there is disagreement, the court will make the final decision.
