Creative Packaging Design:
Portia Munson's Pink Project
When tasked with creating the packaging to accompany an artist's exhibition, I chose one that I have long admired. Portia Munson's 'Pink Project' is a group of installations that on the surface simply look pretty and decorative, but actually embody both feminist and environmentalist messages, and are as relevant today as when she first debuted this series in 1994. They have been recreated and shown multiple times since then- and this is my 2021 reimagining!

You are invited to the exhibition preview showcase of 'Pink is Forever' the new iteration of 'The Pink Project', for National Pink Day!
Outer Bag
To house the components for this package, I wanted the outer bag to be a user-friendly handheld card bag. The design is quite simple, as the focus is on my chosen artists' work. The "banner" motif was inspired by the 'Bachelorette' and 'Birthday Girl' sashes that are included in Munson's bedroom installation. Clear white outlines frame each plane of the design, focussing the eye.
The outer bag is reminiscent of gift bags and toy packaging, to match the imagery of collected nostalgic items from Portia Munson's 'Pink Project: Table'.
Rose-Tinted Glasses
What better way to view the exhibition than through your own personalised rose-tinted glasses? Take them home with you to turn everything into a Portia approved colour palette!
Tube + Free Gifts
This first tube contains a small leaflet and some free items. These upcycled pink objects are the beginning of your very own 'Pink Project', and the small leaflet enclosed shows you how you can share your collection on social media, as an interactive activity.
The tubes are split into sections, with some panels covered in imagery of 'The Pink Project' and the central panel displaying text, once more in the style of a decorative sash. I chose to use similar white outline details to the outside of the bag.
Tube + Leaflets
The second tube container holds half of the information pack- two leaflets which give more information about Portia Munson's work and practice, as well as details of the three main installations at the exhibition- The Table, Bedroom and Coffin.
The second tube follows the same design format as the first, but features imagery from the 'Pink Project: Bedroom' instead of 'the Table'.
Leaflets
I have designed two accordion-style circular leaflets that sit inside this second tube, which use white rounded outlines, with the text sitting at the centre of the page. The front and back of each leaflet contains images and the story of 'The Pink Project'.
Informational Posters
For the second part of my information pack, I chose to create posters which included further details about the meanings behind Portia Munson's installations. These can be displayed as decorative items after the exhibition.
Each poster includes information about Portia's work and its meanings, including quotes from the artist and insights into her creation process.
Each poster has a different theme- one discusses the feminist stance of Portia's views on pink, the second uncovers the environmental focus of the installations, and the third talks about the shades of pink specifically featured- and their variation over time.
This landscape poster design centres on our materialistic culture that Portia criticises in her pieces- against a backdrop of 'Pink Project: Table'.
