Every November, Homestead Hospice, based in Columbia, South Carolina, honors military veterans during National Veterans and Military Families Month. For several months leading up to November 2019, Mr. Mantei and his daughter spent time every week with local veterans in hospice care, delivering gifts they had purchased and also bringing the best gifts of all: a touch of warmth, humor, and humanity.
The Mantei family often spent hours listening to the veterans tell stories and share lessons learned over their long lives. Hearing from real people who lived the history most Americans only read about was an enriching and humbling experience, one that brought new depths of understanding and empathy for the hardships and struggles others have lived through.
In 2002 the Department of Veterans Affairs founded a series of initiatives offering hospice and palliative treatment, as statistics showed more and more veterans were increasingly in need of this type of end-of-life care. While the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily made in-person volunteer visits impossible in most locations, several local veterans and hospice organizations across the country have begun to make connections between ailing veterans and volunteers through virtual technology.
