UMK- Design Contest Winner 2020

Uuden Musiikin kilpailu (Contest for New Music) is a music competition that selects Finland’s entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. The show is organized by the Finnish broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle). For the honor of UMK’s ten years anniversary in 2021, they organized a design contest for a trophy that will be handed to the winner. This award will be recycled from the winner to the next winner every year.

My winning design was one of the two finalists for which the public could vote between 5-16.10.2020. The award works in a similar way as snow globes. When shaken, the glitter will fall over the logo of UMK like the confetti over the winner on stage.

I am so grateful for this opportunity and could not be more proud of the team that I had the pleasure to work with in order to create the trophy. Such talented people: Protohouse Finland / Aki Mertsola (Assembly, manufacturing of stainless steel- and inner parts), Promec / Timo Juntunen (Mechanical design for inner part & CAD-images), Seppo Nauha (Birch handle and container), Lasismi / Kaappo Lähdesmäki (Glass globe) and Laser Quality Markings Salo / Kim Nivalinna (Laser engravings).

The positioning of laser engravings (Year-Name-Song of the winner) got inspirations from audio waveform.

I also designed a container for the trophy for an easy storage. I wanted to use Finnish work and materials as much as possible. We for example used 20 years old birch tree in the handle + container and stainless steel in the neck of the trophy from Finnish factory Outokumpu.
