Edwin Hammond Meredith's profile

Boys and Girl Club Summer Program Prevents Learning

When he's not taking part in rally races or working as a trophy driver, Edwin Hammond Meredith supports several youth-focused causes. Edwin Hammond Meredith is involved with the national nonprofit 4-H and his local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club.

Since 2013, the Boys and Girls Club has run the annual summer learning program, Summer Brain Gain, designed to counteract the symptoms of summer learning loss. When school is out, millions of children go months without enriching learning experiences. This can result in significant losses in math and reading skills, especially in children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Worst of all, these losses can accumulate year over year, leaving the most disadvantaged children years academically behind their more affluent peers.

To ensure all children have access to learning experiences, the Summer Brain Gain offers academic modules based on topics suitable for elementary, middle school, and high school students. The curriculum can be supplemented with the SBG Read! literacy program that encourages active reading throughout the summer.
