Nicklaus Children’s Hosp. Offers Specialized Care Kids

Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva is the chief clinical officer of Nicklaus Children’s Health System in Miami, Florida. There, Dr. Ramesh Sachdeva’s overseas the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

PICU patients at Nicklaus Children’s are seen by staff physicians in a variety of specialties, including pulmonology, oncology, and neurology. Some 100 critical care nurses provide round-the-clock monitoring for up to 40 children whose conditions merit special attention. They are stationed next to patients’ rooms for rapid response.

The PICU is one of only three facilities in Florida that perform apheresis, the temporary removal of specific blood components to treat diseases. Recently it was tasked with treating multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a condition that has appeared in children since the COVID-19 outbreak. Other illnesses addressed in the PICU include diabetes insipidus, cardiac arrhythmia, toxic shock syndrome, and thyroid imbalances.

To offset the sometimes stressful presence of medical technology, the unit uses an aquatic theme that creates a peaceful atmosphere. Family members can sleep in the patients’ private rooms, which are equipped with Internet and televisions. They can also relax in a lounge that features a dining table, coffeemaker, and refrigerator.
