Project goals
Although our design team is small, we’re spread across three time zones. Since we frequently work very independently of each other, it became apparent we needed a stronger illustration style/system to help our work feel more cohesive. We wanted to build a style that was solid enough to reflect the same language through all pieces, but flexible enough to support each designer’s individual expressions of that style.
My experience
To kick-off this initiative, I hosted a Design team offsite in our San Francisco office. We had a full week to work in the same space together. I led a variety of sessions on team values, brand, color, and illustration. We spent a lot of time looking at and discussing various styles we liked and ideas specific to Fyber and our narrative. We defined the qualities we wanted our illustrations to convey, which would serve as direction to help lead us, both during this process and when we were back to working independently. Being able to start the project in person really helped us stay connected to initial ideas after the offsite and as we continued to collaborate remotely.

The outcome
After months of collaboration and iteration, we landed on an initial style that we felt would work as a jumping off point. We defined key language that included human elements; data/tech elements; and layering patterns. As we all started adopting the new style and using it, we kept in close communication about how it was working, identifying tweaks or additions to the elements as needed. The new style has been a great success in unifying our brand across the materials and channels where it’s been applied. And through the development process, the Design team has gained valuable insight about our own illustration and working styles and fine-tuning our remote collaboration.
