Designing a dynamic visual identity system
Fiesta Da Literati 2019, IIITDM Jabalpur
Fiesta Da Literati is a week-long annual event of Samvaad - The Literary and Quizzing Society, IIITDM Jabalpur. I had the opportunity to design posters for the event, so my task was to get the entire college excited about the wide variety of events happening over the course of a week.
I pushed myself to try out something new this time. Instead of following a cookie cutter conventional approach for posters, I wanted to design the posters using a dynamic graphic design system that would unify all the promotional material created for the event, while still allowing enough freedom to give individual posters their unique flavor.
My first step was to try capturing the essence of the fest in the form of a logo with a suitable typeface and color palette. After trying out variations, I zeroed onto this idea of denoting the six main days of the festival through six colors and prominently featuring the colors in the logo. The structure on the right denotes a stack of books, emphasizing the literary tone of the fest. I chose Poppins for the typeface as I felt it was clean, legible at different sizes and captured the mood of the fest. I selected the colors for the palette that worked well together, with no single color overwhelming the others.
The first event release poster informs the viewer of the dates and times of the scheduled events at a glance. It gently introduces the design system through highlighted backgrounds for each of the six days.
The day summary posters were released later, giving out the events scheduled for that day.
Individual events had their posters too!
I was pleasantly surprised by the flexibility that this self imposed system provided, leaving ample space for creative exploration. My biggest takeaway from this process was learning how to balance freedom and restriction while designing a dynamic system.
