CHINESE MILLENNIALS
[ Multi media: Book, Installation, and Video ]

I interviewed my Chinese friends who were born between 1984 and 2000. I recorded their basic information (gender, date of birth, place of residence), their perception of their identity (dreams, personalities, descriptions of themselves), their background (rooms, favorite objects), and the pain and doubt they encountered (texts). I used the photo to present their appearance and recorded some descriptions in Chinese. The information for all was vertically stratified according to age, while other details were horizontally classified, building my database.

I choose photos to materialize the stories of these people and high- light the dimension of time. In the final presentation, I used three forms to express my database: a book, four sculptures, and a short video. I wanted to build a multi-layered spatial experience. The book records the growing experiences of 46 friends, making the audience feel the existence of individuals and the commonality of the collective. The sculpture is an abstract visual language that I use to emphasize the traces of trauma on everyone. The short video is a visible flowing background that constructs the overall atmosphere. The distortion of the images realities builds an ambiguous and creepy ambiance to expresses the elusive and doubt of the young Chinese generation.
