Normalize Public Breastfeeding
An Undergraduate Thesis Output
Normalize Public Breastfeeding is a collection of digital campaign posters
that aims to break the stigma on breastfeeding in public; give support to breastfeeding mothers;
and encourage mothers-to-be who are contemplating to do so.
In this time where wearing face mask is a must and certain health protocols were established due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the artist adjusted the illustrations based on how people are coping now with the new normal.
CONCEPT
My sister is a breastfeeding mother herself and whenever she goes out to do some errands, she takes her baby with her. I also go with her sometimes and when her daughter would cry out of hunger and she will breastfeed her child, even when we are in the middle of a bus or jeepney ride or even in a public place and there were people who are giving unsolicited looks, giving the impression that they do not like what they are seeing. My sister has told me that some relatives and friends are also telling her to stop breastfeeding her children.
This could negatively affect the mother's choice to breastfeed but thankfully, my sister is determined to exclusively breastfeed her children and she decided to become a breastfeeding advocate. This has inspired me to make my undergraduate thesis study about supporting and giving encouragement to breastfeeding mothers and mothers-to-be who are contemplating whether they would choose to breastfeed their children.
As a Graphics Design and Multimedia student, I decided to help on breaking the stigma by creating digital campaign posters to spread awareness to other people. I know this has a long way to go but through time, may the perspective of the people who are stigmatizing public breastfeeding could be changed.
