Kahani, Indian Restaurant at Chelsea, London

Kahani project was about an Indian concept restaurant located in Wilbraham place in Chelsea. The main idea was to create an innovative interior that would give the diner an aura of suspense intimacy transporting them to a unique new world. The surprise and  intimacy is achived through a combination of theatrical  lighting and a contemporary interpretation of Indian ‘Jaali’ perforated screens: the use of ancient jaali screens creates a series of intimate spaces each with varying  transparencies that mediate between privacy and intrigue. The sequence of these screens add an element of theatricality: each space reveals a surprise and consequent sense of euphoria as you progress through the restaurant. The peacock colour-palette was chosen as a theme, is associated with deep warmth, passion, joy and happiness.
In addition, my intention was to create also an eco-friendly restaurant. The results of research lead to biophilia. Biophilia affirms that there is a strong neurological effect of plants on people: indeed humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. A biophilic space affects the para-sympathetic part of the brain which relaxes the mind and body, recreating a feeling of holidaying in a beautiful place without a care in the world. Studies shown that biophilic spaces with higher foliage percentages generally encourage customers to spend more freely. Therefore, the concept developed by applying in main room an amount of plants hanging from the ceiling.
