ThamelRemit Rebranding

Project Background

ThamelRemit.com was founded in 2014 with the sole aim to connect Nepalese diaspora living in the United States with their people back home. Beginning in 2016, the company started US to Nepal money transfer services. How was this different than the incumbents like Western Union and Moneygram? The lower processing fees and the overheads made it cost a nominal sending fee, so it became the go-to option for Nepalese living in the US to send money back home.

The original logo was designed by me in 2014 through my earlier design start-up Expresiv Studios. I left the company but the few brands like ThamelRemit remained with me even after I exited Expresiv.

When the company was founded, there was not much noise in the market and there were fewer competition. With the sudden emergency of other transfer companies like Transferwise, WorldRemit, Xoom and the likes, it became important that ThamelRemit got a brand refresh to re-establish the positioning of the brand to existing customers, and to also appeal to the new generation of customers who were slowly on-boarding, making it necessary to also resonate with millennials.

So we decided to get a facelift. Welcome the new ThamelRemit.
A rickshaw ride gets you from point A to B

...and ThamelRemit gets your cash from user A to B.

To those don't know -- Thamel is a very popular touristy place in Kathmandu, Nepal. The roots of ThamelRemit and the parent company Thamel.com belong in the narrow alleys (or as they're known as gallis) of Thamel. One popular means of transport through the narrow gallis of Kathmandu are the classic rickshaws. Shown in the picture below, we took inspiration from the dear rickshaw and decided to use it as the brand icon.

The ThamelRemit word-mark and the icon exist separately. We do not use a lockup (which we may do later after few experiments) but for now, we're using the rickshaw as the image of the brand, while the ThamelRemit word still serves as the brand mark.

The idea is t
A geometry of things

The ThamelRemit word-mark is composed of the words Thamel and Remit in lowercase, with the weight of "Remit" being thicker than "Thamel". This was done to add emphasis to the remittance aspect of it. The brand "Thamel" is expected to remain static if the range of services is to grow to other industries, such as ThamelGifts or ThamelMall. In that case, the "gifts" or "mall" would take the same weight and style of "remit", whereas "Thamel" would remain the same.
