A recent article on the SPE website brought focus to the International Energy Agency (IEA) Clean Energy Transitions Summit. A groundbreaking event held on July 20th, it brought together ministers from much of the developed world, regional development bank heads, investors, and corporate executives.

With the event designed to take place at a time of COVID-19 recovery, when strategic shifts are possible, the summit focused on practical pathways toward a “definitive peak” in CO2 emissions This is seen as particularly important amid a landscape in which year-on-year global energy investment is expected to decline by 20 percent.

Developed in tandem with the International Monetary Fund, the IEA’s Sustainable Recovery Plan is designed to preserve or create 9 million jobs while boosting global economic growth. A full 35 percent of the new jobs would involve implementation of stricter energy efficiency measures, while another 25 percent center on wind, solar, and other renewable power systems.

Major emphases included ensuring growth that is inclusive and enables the accelerated scaling of emerging technologies such as hydrogen, batteries, and bioenergy.
