Beespace: The Preservation of Species

Beekeepers and scientists are still unsure what is causing the loss of so many bees, but the fact is that bees are disappearing at alarming rates all over the world. In the UK, around one fifth of honeybee hives were lost in the winter of 2008/09.

Beespace aims to initiate an urban beekeeping movement, by encouraging the public to learn about the bee and its role in our world, prompting individuals to start a new colony for themselves, would in turn (theoretically) help to rebalance a declining bee population in rural areas.

As a project designed to introduce the public to urban bee keeping, building bee hives and the effects of CCD, it was an obvious yet equally important decision to use related shapes and colours in order to engage the public with a subject matter that was already familiar. Beespace offers a solution to bee decline by creating a beefriendly approach to combat falling bee numbers, by building a hive you are not only directly engaging with the subject matter, you are actively learning about it, by building a shelter for bees in an urban location you are creating a home for 50,000 pollinators who in turn will have an huge impact on the environment.
