When I was growing up, I used to see acres of paddy fields. As a little girl, they seemed endless to me and I would see farmers working under the hot sun planting in the seedlings for the next harvest as I passed in our trishaw ride.

Trishaws were a common mode of transportation back then. It is a bicycle with an extended compartment for 2 passengers. The original version would be the carriage being pulled in front by the driver. You would have seen this in old Chinese movies or Shanghai posters.

Looking back, life on the island and its mainland were pretty much like watching a vintage movie.

I looked forward every weekend to take the ferry to visit my parents on the island. The ferries are still operational today and although the journey is shortened with the connecting bridge, I always take the opportunity to use the ferry, just to have that little girl feel again whenever I go back.

This piece is about me remembering the paddy fields, trishaw and ferry rides.

The song that I had chosen for this piece is Ezio Bosso's Sweet and Bitter.
