Kenya Hara Poster

Kenya Hara is a Japanese graphic designer, particularly known for his artistic direction of the Muji store chain. In 2018 a call was opened to recreate the vision of this designer from a personal perspective.

For the creation of this poster, the elements that Hara says are essentially related to traditional Japanese aesthetics were taken into account: delicacy, meticulousness, attention to detail and simplicity. The importance of negative space was also taken into account from the perspective of Japanese philosophy, since they see it as a space that by itself is full of energy, and that is necessary for the understanding of everything.

Origami was used as a way to represent this closeness to Japanese tradition, using carefully chosen geometric figures. These are placed on top of a copper square that resembles the frames used in Hara's works in print advertising for Muji.

In the same way, it was decided to include the Kanji writing system, to strengthen the feeling of the Japanese tradition, with vertical writing being the name of the designer (kenya hara) and horizontal writing being Japan.
Through this, we managed to represent Hara's vision with simple elements without losing the agency's perspective.
