A sense that “history is happening” is swirling around today, perhaps more than ever for many of us.

Three powerful and interlinked forces are commanding our attention. Each is unique. The confluence of all three is challenging the norms, assumptions, structures, and systems of the past in a way that everyone across the country feels one way or another. Every so often, bright lines between one moment and the next in history come. These three forces have drawn a line for us that we will look back on one day and see what side we were on.

The COVID-19 pandemic.

The resultant economic dislocation and uncertainty for millions of Americans in the wake of that pandemic.

And the reflection on broader structural issues of racial inequality and bias (whether explicit or implicit) inspired by the killing of George Floyd and subsequent protests.
