WRC 2 FIA World Rally Championship UI / UX improvement

WRC 2: FIA World Rally Championship is a videogame developed by Milestone S. r. l. and released in 2011.

During a job interview for a UI / UX Designer career opportunity, I was challenged to redesign the Preset section interface in order to make it more accessible and understandable to the more novice and inexperienced players.

I found really interesting to look for a solution that could be readable enough for everyone while including a very large amount of informations and keeping the overall graphic style of the game at the same time.

Here's my solution and the original interface from the game.

The existing list of Preset options is divided in five main categories: Stability, Suspensions, Brakes, Transmission and Traction. These are accessible from both "Change Preset" and "Edit Car Settings" icons, and players can scroll categories to visualize the specific options.

Essential to the player experience is the live 3D model of the player's vehicle with shapes that highlight the parts of the car that are interested by the selected category.

The camera on the player's car changes angle as the players scrolls, in order to give the best overall view of all the components included in the category. Also, when more options need to be displayed, the view on the vehicle resizes to share the space, but the 3D model can always be rotated at will through mouse control or right stick rotation on a gamepad.
When the player starts scrolling through categories, the labels "Change Preset" or "Edit Car Settings" disappear from the lower option bar.
When the player chooses an option from the lower bar, this disappears to give more space to the view of the vehicle model.

When an option from the list is highlighted, the related shape on the car shows a green outline with a flashing white and black filling, in order to be more clear to the eye of the player.
When a category is selected from the sub-menu, a description of it appears and scrolls on the lower section of the page.
While editing the settings of the car, the player can see through a green mark on the levels the previous set values.
Here's a showing of various button layouts on some of the main game platforms.

In order to navigate the list of settings available, the player must use Up and Down arrows, or related movements on the left analog stick, which are set as W and S keys on PC.

On the opposite, values on the settings can be changed with Left and Right stick movements or arrows, set as A and D keys on PC.
