Center On Halsted
"Center on Halsted opened in 2007, though its history originated in 1973 as Horizons Community Services, to advance the health and wellbeing of Chicago’s LGBTQ community. Located in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, Center on Halsted hosts more than two dozen innovative health, social and community programs and services. Certified staff provide a lifespan of support—for youth who need a place to live and a hot meal to eat, to seniors who seek social interaction and guidance, to behavioral health and anti-violence individual and group support, to culinary and hospitality job training and readiness, to free HIV testing and education with a goal of ZERO new HIV infections by 2030. Community and cultural events—panel discussions, movie screenings, pick-up games of basketball, volleyball and dodgeball—also provide fellowship and recreation. Last year, more than 40,677 LGBTQ+ people and allies participated in programs and services at Center on Halsted.
LGBTQ Youth are 120 times likely to experience homelessness, while almost 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. In 2016, Center on Halsted launched Chicago’s first LGBTQ-affirming transitional housing programing for youth experiencing homelessness, located in the South Shore neighborhood. In the next few months and in partnership with Rebuild Foundation, Center on Halsted plans to house eight LGBTQ+ youth ages 18-25 with transitional housing and supportive services—case management, behavioral health services, crisis intervention, life skill coaching, employment training services, financial/budget education and other referral services. The Youth Housing initiative is in addition to the 773 youth who receive services and participate in programs at Center on Halsted.
