El Gran Dragón Escarlata / The Great Scarlet Dragon
Para mi participación para la segunda Bienal de Ilustración, elegí un tema un tanto diferente. Inspirado en una imagen que vi por un amigo, me puse a investigar más sobre ello y para mi sorpresa mi mente empezó a construir una versión de ello y del cómo se vería aplicado a mi estilo.
La imagen era sobre "El gran dragón escarlata y la dama vestida de sol" que son parte de un fragmento del Apocalípsis bíblico que dice algo así:
"...cuando he aquí que otra figura prodigiosa apareció en el cielo: un enorme dragón color escarlata, con siete cabezas y diez cuernos, y una diadema en cada una de sus siete cabezas. Con su cola arrastró un tercio de las estrellas del cielo y las arrojó sobre la tierra..."
For my participation in the second Biennial of Illustration, I chose a somewhat different theme. Inspired by an image I saw from a friend, I started to investigate more about it and to my surprise my mind began to build a version of it and how it would be applied to my style.

Del boceto a las líneas
Para concretar la idea, en la parte del boceto, imaginé un dragón con diferentes cabezas, cada una con función específica: cazar, sumergirse en el agua, escuchar más a detalle, defender, triturar, escupir fuego y controlar a todo el cuerpo. Por ello la decisión de darle una personalidad más concreta y que pudieran coexistir todas en una misma entidad.
To make the idea concrete, during the sketching, I imagined a dragon with different heads, each with a specific function: hunt, dive into water, a sharp listener, defend, crush, spit fire and one that controls the whole body. For this reason, I decided to give it a more specific personality and make them all coexist in the same entity.

El verdadero color del Gran Dragón Escarlata
La selección de color para esta ilustración estuvo basada en gran parte por el mito, pero también por los colores del atardecer, de ladrillos y de obsidianas. El imaginar como sería si existiera en realidad una bestia de estas características, ¿qué color sería?
La combinación de los matices y sus diferentes valores, la armonía que hay en ellos y lo distinto que se perciben dependiendo de la luz y la sombra. El que la mayoría del cuerpo esté rodeado por escamas y por huesos que dentro de mi imaginación tendrían que ser distintos, resistentes y oscuros, como la obsidiana.
The color selection for this illustration was based largely on the myth, but also on sunsets, bricks, and obsidian colors. Imagining what it would be like if a beast with these characteristics actually existed, what color would it be?
The combination of shades and their different values, the harmony in them and how different they are perceived depending on the light and shadow. The fact that most of the body is surrounded by scales and bones that in my imagination would have to be different, resistant and dark, like obsidian.

Para la creación de las partes más sobresalientes de la estructura y el cuerpo del dragón, como parte de su formación ósea, decidí usar una técnica distinta, principalmente vectores, para dar un acabado más cristalino, sólido y con reflejos, para hacer distinción de materiales entre el cuerpo/escamas y los 'huesos' de obsidiana.
For the creation of the most outstanding parts of the dragon's structure and body, as part of its bone formation, I decided to use a different technique, mainly vectors, to give a more crystalline, solid and reflected finish, to distinguish between materials. between the body/scales and the obsidian 'bones'.

Como dato adicional al color, tenía ganas de explorar más sobre la simbología detrás de la historia, del significado de ella y el por qué de las cabezas, así que tomando eso como base, decidí dar uno propio a cada una mientras las diseñaba. Basándome en los ya conocidos 7 pecados capitales, cada una de las cabezas se formó con uno de ellos en mente: la soberbia, avaricia, glotonería, lujuria, pereza, envidia e ira fueron gran parte de la inspiración para esta pieza, así como los motivos detrás de cada uno de sus significados religiosos.
As an additional detail of the color, I wanted to explore more about the symbology behind the story, the meaning of it and the why of the heads, so based on that, I decided to give each one of my own while designing them. Based on the already known 7 deadly sins, each of the heads was formed with one of them in mind: pride, greed, gluttony, lust, sloth, envy and anger were a large part of the inspiration for this piece, as well as the motifs behind each of their religious meanings.
