Diploma Project - Strejnic - Phase II

Aeronautics Center - Strejnic Romania

The proposed project is situated in Strejnic, a village situated near the city of Ploiesti, o the site of the existing aerodrome and aviation school. This is one of the most important centers in the country, hosting a flight school that is well renowned for its successful pilots and air-show events, both civilian and military.
The area in which the aerodrome is located, as well as the connection with the major cities in its vicinity and the ease of access makes it a perfect environment for developing beyond the current form as a unit and regarding its function. Evolution opportunities are very high and the prospects for the future work in the favor of the aerodrome. The context that surrounds it is mainly a small industrial area but most of these are disused or closed.
It is a particularly interesting activity that draws a very large audience for both air shows, demonstrations or practice runs and also for future students or enthusiasts of the sport. The location and type of landscape that surrounds the aerodrome are perfect for testing out new light weight aircrafts or hot air balloons ,offering a lot of possibilities to national design club members or passionate aeronautics spectators.
The site and the atmosphere that surrounds it are things that inspire the related function and it has all the possibilities to continue to support it as it did since the development of aeronautics. It can be said that the site has its history, also that is has its own personality; it may influence and unveil itself to visitors looking for an escape from the everyday life.  It’s one of those places that stand out, breathe life and influence space as well as people that offers and environment detached from its surroundings, isolated in the middle of civilizations and can be experienced by any one.
The project aims, more than anything, to a close connection with people, the users of a place like this are the most important part of it, that is why the particular aspects concluded as being negative will be changed and a reinvention of the whole site will follow,  a completely opposite construction layout and a neutral stance towards the rural environment it`s situated in.
The overall image of the finished project aims to defy the visual perspectives from the main access points, but not to the point of compromising the adjacent sites or their development. The new building has to be neutral and in the same time it has to inspire strength and quality without disrupting any part of its context but at the same time it has to inspire a subtle invitation to explore its spaces and activities even when there are no official events scheduled.
The two main objects that stand at the foundation of the new project are the elements required by the function, these spaces are : visitors related area and the hangar.  These will undergo further changes based on specific factors that will transform them into architectural spaces and shapes : the flight patterns and accessibility.
Based on this conceptual evolution of form, the spaces and their destinations are proposed, the hangar remains a standalone structure and function, the only link between it and the other parts will be a strictly formal one, and the focus will be on the human aspect of the projects spaces.
Visitors and future pilots’ spaces will take up the largest part of the built area,  the links between these spaces and accesses, the types of areas and the visitors viewing area will shape up a route that will explore the whole building.
The project will be a reflection of the aircraft industry, from the materials used to the exhibits, it will bind together the classic and high tech of the new era in a shape that transforms classic spaces and aeronautics architecture in new environments for interaction with the object itself and the passion for aviation.
