Grand Est is an administrative region in northeastern France. It superseded three former administrative regions—Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine—on 1 January 2016 under the provisional name of Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine (ACAL or, less commonly, ALCA), as a result of territorial reform which had been passed by the French legislature back in 2014.
The region sits astride three water basins (Seine, Meuse and Rhine), spanning an area of 57,433 km2 (22,175 sq mi), the 5th largest in France, and includes two mountain ranges (Vosges and Ardennes). It shares borders with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland, and stands partly within the European Megalopolis. As of 2017, it had a population of 5,549,586 inhabitants. The administrative capital and largest city, by far, is Strasbourg.
After merging three regions into one larger region, the Region needs a new identity. The graphic identity and logos provide the starting points for the geographical features of all three regions, while at the same time acting very easily and flexibly. Graphic elements can be used in different combinations. The new identity of the region is also important in the light of the increasing role of the regions in economic and public life. With the new graphic identity, the region will gain greater visibility and a basis for building a solid identity for the entire community.
