I, like most photographers, adore the Golden Hour, and plan most family shoots at this time. The sun shimmers beguilingly on hair, warmly gilds our skin, and obligingly filters through grass and leaves to provide an enchanting aura for almost any subject.
But following the golden hour is a very overlooked time of day, a serene and peaceful half hour before things get really too dark for photography on all but the most expensive of cameras. Twilight is my favourite time to photograph just for myself. The world quiets, bats swoop silently above me, and I am alone in the garden with my thoughts. Leaves are embossed and outlined in silver, my fairy lights glow through the leaves, as the sky shades from lavender to indigo overhead. It is a time for slow photography, grainy textural shots, and appreciating the many shades of green around me. As the evening descends, I appreciate the solitude, and savour this peaceful moment as a rare blessing.
