1956

The pretext for military intervention: the provision of "fraternal assistance to the Hungarian people in the defense of their socialist gains, in the defeat of the counter-revolution and the elimination of the threat of the revival of fascism."
Victims: as a result of the suppression of the revolution, according to various estimates, from 2.5 to 3 thousand Hungarians died, about 20 thousand were injured; mass repressions unfolded in the country; about 200 thousand people fled from Hungary to the West.


Czechoslovakia
1968

The pretext for military intervention: "providing urgent assistance to the fraternal Czechoslovak people" in eliminating the threat "to the socialist system and statehood from the side of counter-revolutionary forces colluding with external forces hostile to socialism."
Casualties: The most common estimate is that the invasion killed 137 civilians; more than 70 thousand people left the country.


Afghanistan
1979-1989

The pretext for military intervention: "providing international assistance to the friendly Afghan people" in repelling external aggression.
Victims: during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, about 1 million civilians died, many as a result of extrajudicial executions and massacres in rural areas; more than 5 million became refugees; irretrievable losses on the part of the USSR amounted, according to official figures, to 15 thousand people.


Georgia
2008

The pretext for military intervention: conducting an "operation to force Georgia to peace" in response to its "aggression against peaceful South Ossetian citizens and Russian peacekeepers."
Victims: as a result of the conflict, the Georgian side announced the death of 170 military personnel, 14 policemen, and 228 civilians, the Russian side announced the death of 67 military personnel, and South Ossetia announced 365 killed, among which, probably, were both military personnel and civilians.


Syria
2015 - present

The pretext for military intervention: air support for Syrian government forces in their fight against ISIS.
Victims: According to the annual report of The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), since 2015, about 7,000 civilians have died directly from the actions of the Russian armed forces in Syria, including more than 2,000 children; over 1.2 thousand attacks were made on civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and markets.
