The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice
In conjunction with my set design for The Adding Machine, I also wanted to design the costumes and complete my vision for the world of the play. I wanted to keep the period true to the period the play was written in 1920. The reason was twofold. One, I thought it was interesting that the idea of technology taking over our life has been a concern since the 1920's. Two, I liked the sharp, dark mood that costumes from this time period could give. I also wanted to explore creating a culture where numbers had taken over most names and how that might shape fashion. My final concept was period clothing with numbers worked into prints and accessories.
