For this project we were asked to make a set of cohesive zoo icons. My focus was having a minimal line drawing on top of a geometric shape which would tie them all together. Additionally I have each of the lined drawings protruding out of their background shape.
Some of my process is shown above including my original concept with a black line and brighter patterned background shapes. After some review I decided to simplify the icons a bit more by unifying the line weight and making them monochromatic. I finished off by making minor changes like removing details which made the design feel congested as well as heightening the contrast between the colors.
For my mockups I chose a few practical places these icons may be seen, including in the gift shop on a tote bag or phone case, and on the flags around the zoo. I also decided to name the zoo Sanctuary Zoo for the sake of mocking up this project. Sanctuary Zoo puts the animals first and allows visitors to see animals without exploiting them in the way a traditional zoo would.
