ARHETIPURI - Pavilion for public space, Bucharest

ARHETIPURI

Pavilion for the
public space
Bucharest
The project was an entry for the architecture competition ARHETIPURI (june 2010) for designing a pavilion for stimulating social encounter in public space in Bucharest. The object had to be lightweight, recyclable, resistant to urban vandalism and with a minimum impact on the place where it was supposed to be built (so minimum perforations or other kind of interventions during building phase).

The concept shown here was based on the supposition that two distinct groups of individuals will always have a debate, whether it is about politics, music, sports etc., which in itself is a form of social contact. On the two humps resulted from "curving of the ground" (the built space) these two group identities can have the opportunity to form under the smooth and uniform surface above them. They become nodes in the urban social space; give them also a place with large vistas opening around and the people will spend enough time there to begin to feel attached; assure that the object is clearly distinct from the surrounding area and a PLACE is born.
A dialog is based on different or complementary positions and is the starting point for the forms of socialization.

In a spot where the smooth social space is touching the striated built space, places are born, where different identities are beginning a dialog.

The pavilion is such a place, a cutout of the striated built space, deformed in order to create two different group identities, under a smooth and homogenous cover.
