E-commerce B2B/c

🔎 Project overview

This long-term contract began at the height of the pandemic. One of the pharmaceutical company..., made the decision to optimize and streamline numerous local e-commerce projects in both B2B and B2C sectors.
Recognizing my expertise in the field of user interaction and interface design and engineering, they sought my assistance. I was invited to embark on this journey, gaining invaluable experience in developing a massive SAAS e-commerce platform based on SAP. This platform would handle orders for animal medicine and cater to internal customers. The goal was to create a localized and deployable interface that embraced a highly flexible and easily scalable design approach. Equally important, it needed to be swiftly updatable based on the feedback and requirements of end-users (local businesses) and their specific needs and tasks.

💼 Business challenge

Develop a comprehensive cross-platform system that integrates the best e-commerce practices. The objective is to elevate the sales performance to a significantly higher level with localization for the world's largest consumer markets.

⚙️ Technical challenges

Provide swift and efficient support for various business processes, leveraging my full range of expertise. This includes the concurrent management of multiple tasks and maintaining a high pace of work to meet project deadlines.

🪢 Team

Key individuals involved at the outset:
We had Product Owner, Project Manager, and myself as a UX/UI designer (consultant) initiating the project. As the project progressed, our team expanded exponentially, with E.. and Co....joining us. This multicultural and multinational team operated remotely across five different time zones and three continents.
After a brief overview of the development requirements and existing constraints, we embarked on our journey together.

🧩 Onboarding + Tasks and phases of project activity

ASAP — Jump in to the project environment! Rush start. Lack of time…

Phase 1

1. Process requirements collection and defining expectations for the final delivery.
2. Developing wireframes to establish the information architecture and basic workflow, continuously updating them as needed.
3. Creating a basic flow to present the final visual design.
— Development of a cross-platform MVP e-commerce platform for desktop, tablet and smartphone using AdobeXD (requirement).
— Integration of corporate guidelines.
— Creation of an interactive prototype for the final presentation.
— Support of project activities with presentations and printed materials for the top management of the corporation.
4. Development of a basic style guide based on the corporate style and existing visual components and materials.
5. Designing update according to corporate style guide updates.

Phase 2

1. Development of additional scenarios for the use and localization of the system.
2. Integration and implementation of W3C accessibility standards.
3. Begin building the design, conducting UAT testing, and identifying bugs based on usage scenarios. Continuously updating the list of scenarios with bug fixes and error corrections.
4. Support of promotional campaigns, creation of materials for visual communication.
5. A new round of UAT and the strive for pixel-perfect design implementation.
6. Creation of detailed instructions for enhancing the overall appearance and fine-tuning the interface's behaviour on different devices.
Some examples of describing and documenting identified frontend UI issues.
7. Processing feedback from users.
8. Updating the appearance of the interface and system behaviour based on user feedback.
9. Participation in the construction of the project roadmap.

Phase 3

1. Design additional scenarios for system usage and provide support for developers during the implementation process.
2. Create interactive prototypes of new scenarios to present to customers, gathering feedback for necessary changes and updates.
3. Conduct UAT on existing markets to ensure the system meets the required standards and functionalities.
4. Independent initialization and further design vision of the V2.0 design system. The objective was to address any imperfect, non-systemic, and non-unified solutions that had accumulated during the project activities. The team aimed to present a comprehensive global solution through specific improvements to both the team and management. Additionally, the main scenarios were aligned with the design system to ensure consistency and cohesiveness throughout the project.
5. Migration from AdobeXD to Figma — quite a long and voluminous process.
6. Development of a design system and reproduction of the main scenarios that are common in most countries and markets. Along the way, a number of modules and their display and unification in relation to each other were improved. Plus, the main scenarios were aligned to the design system.
7. Reproduction of the project environment based on Figma.

Phase 4

Leaving the project.
During this phase, the following tasks were completed:
— Creation of detailed instructions documenting the project activities, including a comprehensive description of the processes involved in producing the design system.
— Identification and documentation of potential issues and impacts resulting from leaving the project team.
— Organization and facilitation of meetings with management and corporate designers to share knowledge about the design system and its structure.
— Transfer and archival of work files from previous years to the corporation's servers, ensuring proper preservation of project assets.

🎯 Results

1. A massive, comprehensive, and robust design system was successfully created, developed, and refined iteratively throughout the project.
2. The development process and final delivery were effectively supported, incorporating repeated testing, evaluation, and successful implementation.
3. The experience of working in a diverse multinational team with varying levels of English proficiency proved to be a valuable and non-trivial experience. It highlighted the importance of using clear and concise language for efficient communication and task execution, enabling tasks to be performed more effectively.
4. Total revenue increase up to $xB in year.
