Jamal Daniel's profile

News Site Wins International Press Institute Award

Entrepreneur Jamal Daniel has a special interest in promoting the understanding of the Middle East. Jamal Daniel is the founder and chief executive of Al-Monitor, an award-winning website that analyzes events in the Middle East.

In 2014, Al-Monitor was honored with the Free Media Pioneer Award, sponsored by the International Press Institute, an organization of publishers, reporters, and editors who promote independent journalism. The institute singled out Al-Monitor for its up-to-date mix of news, commentary, and features concerning an unstable part of the world.

The Al-Monitor website arranges its content into “pulses” - collections of stories about individual nations, such as Turkey, Israel, Iran, and Iraq. Reports from the United States and Russia offer other perspectives.

Also available on Al-Monitor are features about the arts. A recent edition covered the closure of Egyptian bookstores, threats to Turkish archaeological artifacts, and a controversial comedian from the Gaza Strip.

Reaction to Al-Monitor from outside the Middle East has been positive. The Economist, HuffPost, and The Washington Post have identified Al-Monitor as a significant source of news and analysis. Time magazine, Reuters, and The Wall Street Journal regularly use material from Al-Monitor.
