As part of a college brief I was tasked with designing and producing a “Zine”- a self-published magazine on a typographer of my choice. I decided to base my zine on Herb Lubalin, a typographic artist whose work rose to fame during the 60’s and 70’s. Lubalin broke the rules of typography in his work, often manipulating space, layout and convention to shine a light on political issues of the day and grab attention with his quirky visual style.
In my zine I wanted to replicate some of his most iconic designs throughout my spreads. I experimented and played with layout, tracking and scaling of text to achieve the same eye-catching look that he did. Many of my spreads take influence from some of his most famous editorial work.

I used in- design to produce my zine and gained valuable experience in typesetting and proof checking work for print. The zine was printed to a bespoke size which is smaller than normal, as I wanted to create a pocket size booklet. Multi-coloured card was chosen for each of the pages as I wanted the Zine to have the look of a 1960’s publication with a slightly worn look.
