Who doesn’t like snow? In this project I focused on rendering hyper realistic microscopic snowflakes!
When I started this project, it was still Christmas so that was my mindset getting into this, few busy months later we finally have the renders. This was a very interesting project on many levels, for one I did not want to make those perfect symmetrical snowflakes I wanted to be as real as possible.
The Snowflake Pattern
This required a bit of math, basically I would have 3-5 spikes generate in a spiral, then I would generate some more spikes on top of those lines and rinse and repeat, I also allow for variance in spike length. Very similar to how snow flakes build up in real life under most conditions.
A Very Power Intensive Render
Surprisingly this render was very tricky, when you have hundreds of thousands of spikes making up a few hundred snowflakes things get toasty fast! Keep in mind all these snowflakes are specular material, meaning light can diffuse through out it.
Overall I am happy with the final product, even though its no longer snowing where I am in Vancouver Canada.
