OX-HERDING: STAGES OF ZEN PRACTICE

"There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes."

This proverb perfectly describes how the eastern Zen philosophy is perceived by different people. For this reason, I used a lot of semi-blank space to let the readers have their imagination and interpretation. Trying to describe the abstract ideas behind the story rather than simply drawing the shapes of objects is a method commonly found in eastern artworks. To carry on this tradition, I used black and white as the main colours to imitate traditional Chinese painting and to control the tone of the whole booklet design. Meanwhile, the light yellow of the hat was used to highlight the character in each painting to draw attention from the readers.

The original story contains an important hint, the footprint of the bull, which is hard to express. Therefore, I set the background of this story in the winter to make it more credible. The winter scene could also reflect the hardness throughout the process of finding the bull.
